The stories aren't dependant on one another so you can start them in any order and the only real cohesion between them are the visits to characters that we know or know of and their connections to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a bibliophiles fantasy of a secret underground library containing thousands of the rarest books that have ever existed, looked after by a robed victorian figure who walks its sacred halls by lantern light. However it redeems itself in the last third, the pace ramps up it finds some direction and becomes very good indeed.A gripping story of love and darkness, illuminating some very base human instincts
I loved Carlos Ruis Zafon's first book "The Shadow of the Wind" in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series and was really looking forward to reading this. Andrew Reimer said, "Here is more of the same from the author of
It is the second entry in Zafón's Cemetery of Forgotten Books series and a prequel to 2001's Shadow of the Wind, but The Angel's Game … The stories are riviting, the characters are complex and engaging, and his wrtiting style has a classical poetic lyricism to it. The story comes to life in your mind and gives you plenty to think about. This has a similar gothic tone, and the writing is equally deft. On its own, it kept me totally enthralled up to the last handful of pages. This is a strangely addictive book.

At the same time he receives a letter from a reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him an irresistible offer. This is exactly what I look for from an author. The Cemetery of Forgotten Books trilogy written by Carlos Ruiz Zafon has been my favorite find of 2016.
I picked up Angels Game after seeing it in Waterstones, not knowing about the success of it's predecessor - Shadow of The Wind.
Engaging hero and well-drawn supporting cast. I dont mind not having all the answers at the conclusion of the book, but I dont like feeling that the author doesnt either - he has had a free hand set up the situation as he wishes and sholud be able to resolve it. David is the main focus of the story and narrator of events. Zafon is a skilled writer.A difficult book to categorise but a fabulous book to read.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 12, 2016 Beautifully written and translated picture of 1920s and early 30s Barcelona prior to the all consuming genesis of the civil war. Another reason this novel held my attention was that I greatly liked the character of David Martin. I flew The Prisoner of Heaven, The Angel's Game, and The Shadow of the Wind in record time. Shadow of the Wind was a great book.
The first I read after Shadow was "The Angel's Game". There seems less pace and characterisation in this book than the first, although these characters are less black and white. In the last few pages though I feel as if the author just waves his hands to magic up any old ending to bring the story to a conclusion, and I am left disappointed.
If you have read Shadow, I would recommend you don't read this immediately afterwards, but it's a must read for lovers of well written fiction.
